Five ways to get more from VASO

Five ways to get more from VASO

Having more options is useful. Finding the right option is better. A few minutes spent setting your direction can make VASO more helpful, whether you want to meet people locally, explore a new sector or find something different to do after work.

1. Give your search a purpose

Before opening the Event Finder, finish this sentence: “I'd like to…” Perhaps it is meet other business owners, understand an industry issue or build confidence in a new role. That small decision makes it easier to choose between a conference, a workshop and an informal networking event.

Search your preferred location and try a relevant event type. Broaden your filters if the first search is too narrow. An adjacent county or a different format might reveal something you would otherwise miss.

2. Help people understand who you are

If you join, add enough to your profile for someone to start a conversation. Explain what you do in everyday language, where you are based and what interests you. A recognisable photograph helps too.

“I help manufacturers improve their sales processes” gives people more to work with than a job title alone. Add a little about the person behind the role, if you are comfortable doing so.

Your event choices are publicly visible

Marking an event as Interested or Going / Yes, I’ve booked can help others see where they might meet you. These choices are publicly visible on VASO, including on event pages, your profile and activity feeds. They are not a private diary or shortlist.

If you do not want others to see your interest in an event or your attendance plans, do not use these options. You can still browse events and book directly with the organiser without marking a status on VASO. Marking a status does not book or reserve a place.

3. Explore the groups

Visit Groups to see where a conversation could continue beyond an event. Look for a shared location, interest or professional challenge. If you create a group, give it a clear purpose and a welcoming opening question.

4. Turn one introduction into a conversation

When you meet someone interesting, follow up with something specific you discussed. A relevant article, a useful introduction or a short message of thanks is a natural next step. You do not need to ask for a meeting immediately.

Use member connections thoughtfully. Relevance and a personal note make a better impression than sending the same pitch to everyone.

5. Come back on your own terms

You do not need to be everywhere. Pick an event that fits your current priorities, check the organiser's details and make room for it if it feels worthwhile. VASO should make finding opportunities easier, rather than add pressure to an already full week.

Find your next event. Your next useful conversation might start there.
