You have made room in your diary to meet people. Now comes the harder choice: a breakfast meeting, a business expo or a padel networking session? Each offers a different way to start conversations. The right choice depends on what you want to do and the setting in which you feel comfortable.

Business breakfasts: start local and keep it focused

A breakfast meeting can suit you when you want to meet people nearby before the working day fills up. Depending on the organiser, there may be introductions, a speaker, a structured discussion or time to chat over coffee.

Look for the meeting format rather than assuming every breakfast works the same way. Check when you need to arrive, whether food is included and whether you will be asked to introduce your business. Some groups welcome visitors; others have membership or professional-category rules.

Expos: explore more businesses in one visit

A business expo gives you several reasons to start a conversation: an exhibitor’s stand, a seminar topic or a question you share with another visitor. It can be useful when you want to explore suppliers, understand a market or meet a broader mix of businesses.

Give yourself a purpose before you arrive. Pick a few exhibitors or sessions that interest you, then leave space to discover something unexpected. Check whether seminars need a separate booking and whether the ticket is for visitors, exhibitors or a particular professional audience.

Padel networking: let a shared activity start the conversation

If you enjoy getting out from behind a desk, padel networking offers an alternative setting. You have something to do together, with opportunities to talk before the session, between games and afterwards.

Read the organiser’s guidance on playing experience, equipment and how the session runs. Do not assume every event is aimed at beginners or that every player is attending to network. Some sessions focus on founders, a particular industry or women in business.

Choose for the conversation you want

For local relationships, a nearby recurring group may be a useful starting point. For research and a wider range of introductions, consider an expo. For a shared experience and a more informal setting, consider sport or social networking.

You can also mix formats. A contact you meet at an exhibition may become someone you invite to a local lunch. The value is in the relationship you develop, rather than how many events you can fit into a month.

Make the follow-up easy

After a good conversation, agree a small next step: share a useful link, make an introduction or arrange a short call. Keep your message specific to what you discussed. A thoughtful follow-up is easier to act on than a generic sales pitch.
