Choose business events that move you forward

A busy networking diary can look productive without doing much for your business. The better question is what you want an event to help you achieve.

That might be meeting potential collaborators, understanding a market, finding a supplier or reconnecting with people you already know. Sales can follow from relationships, but an immediate lead is only one possible outcome.

Choose the outcome before the format

If you want to meet local owners, a smaller recurring group may be a useful starting point. If you need to understand a sector, an exhibition or conference could offer more relevant conversations in one place. If you want to develop a skill, look closely at the workshop agenda and who is teaching it.

Read the organiser's description with your objective in mind. Who is the event aimed at? Is there time to talk? Does the programme address a question you actually have? A well-known venue or a large attendance figure cannot answer those questions for you.

Prepare just enough

Set one clear aim and identify a couple of people, sessions or exhibitors you would like to find. Prepare a brief explanation of your work and a few questions you genuinely want answered.

Leave room for chance encounters. Research should help you feel comfortable, rather than turn the day into a rigid list of targets.

Count the whole investment

A free ticket still takes time. Include travel, preparation and follow-up when deciding whether an event fits your week. Sometimes a nearby breakfast is a better choice than a major conference. Sometimes the conference is exactly the opportunity you need.

Review what changed

Afterwards, record the useful conversations, ideas and agreed next steps. Follow through on promises while the discussion is fresh. Over time, look for patterns: which organisers, audiences and formats lead to worthwhile relationships or decisions?

A simple note can be enough: why you went, what you learned, who you want to stay in touch with and what happened next. Give relationships time to develop, while being honest about events that repeatedly fail to serve a purpose.

You do not need a packed calendar. You need a few good reasons to show up, and enough attention afterwards to make those visits count.
