Beyond the breakfast: padel, darts and a different way to connect

Some conversations flow more easily when there is something else to do. A shared game, a team challenge or a relaxed activity can give people an introduction that has little to do with job titles.

That is part of the appeal of networking through padel, darts, golf and other social activities. They offer another way to spend time with people, particularly if a formal networking room is not your natural setting.

Let the activity do some of the work

A point played together or a missed dart gives everyone something immediate to talk about. You can get to know someone's humour, approach and interests before discussing business.

That does not make the activity a shortcut to trust, or guarantee commercial opportunities. It simply creates a different setting in which a relationship might begin.

Check how welcoming the event really is

Look for clear information about experience levels, equipment, coaching and the format. If you are new to padel, ask whether beginners are welcome and how players are matched. For darts or other games, find out whether the emphasis is social or competitive.

Also check whether there is time to chat before or afterwards. An activity can be enjoyable without offering much opportunity to meet the wider group.

Choose what suits you

Sport is one option, not a requirement. Accessibility, comfort and personal preferences matter. A walk, a creative workshop or an informal coffee gathering may offer the shared experience you are looking for.

If you are inviting colleagues or contacts, offer a choice and make it easy to decline. The best social setting is one people actually want to attend.

Keep the conversation human

Enjoy the activity, include others and resist turning every break into a pitch. If a useful business topic comes up, follow it naturally. If you would like to continue the discussion afterwards, ask.

For organisers, a clear welcome, thoughtful introductions and a format that includes newcomers can matter as much as the venue. Tell people what to expect, including any costs and equipment requirements.

Business connections can start in plenty of places. Find a setting you enjoy and give the people around you your attention.
